The Importance Of Celebrating Milestones — Big And Small
I'm admittedly a little too hard on myself most of the time. I have a feeling most of us are. But — to give myself a pat on the back for a moment — Darby and I are pretty darn good at creating reasons to celebrate.
We're really good at remembering dates, and we love a good anniversary celebration. I was thinking about this lately, as we've had many reasons to celebrate. Of course, the holidays came and gave plenty of opportunities to pause and think about where we were one year ago.
But, beyond the holidays, birthdays and the typical reasons folks celebrate milestones, there are many other moments we like to stop to remember. For instance, Jan. 8 marked the day Darby started her first big job, the anniversary of signing her first lease is coming up — and those are just a couple of examples of great reasons to have mini-celebrations. My partner and I also celebrate what we call "month-iversaries," to take a moment to remember the exact amount of years and months we've been together. To date — 5 years 7 months and counting.
See what I mean — we're pretty good at making excuses to remind ourselves of how far we've come and what's great about right now. Considering I spend most of my time feeling as though I struggle a bit to take in the present moment, it's nice to constantly have reasons to feel grateful come up throughout the year.
When a milestone, no matter how big or small, comes up, we'll select something we want to do — which usually involves food, trying something new or a night in reminiscing.
These moments are perfect for a little reflection and goal-setting, too. Where do you want to be this time next year? What will you accomplish and have to celebrate in the future.
Milestone anniversaries have certainly helped me embrace the past, present and future in different ways, and they're something I love celebrating.
We have a feeling you'd really benefit from giving yourself an excuse to celebrate, too. So, think of a milestone you have coming up or create a new one. Make Feb. 1 the day you celebrate the day you decided to be more present. Any reason is as good as any.
Then, make a tradition out of celebrating these milestones as much as you can. Take it from us — it's been nice to have something to look forward to as well as to help us realize (even if only for the moment) that we're doing pretty great right now, too. And honestly — the more moments you feel like that, the better, right?
So, break out the bubbly, have a girl's night, order a pizza — do whatever you feel like doing and celebrate YOU.
You deserve it.
Here's to you. Me. We.
